At Photolens, we’ve chosen to focus on three major brands: Canon, Fujifilm and Sony. Why these three? Because they offer excellent quality, a wide range of models for beginners and experts alike, and, above all, a strong community that can help you improve.

Nowadays, if you’re just starting out, you’ll mainly have a choice between four main categories

Compact cameras

Compact cameras are small, lightweight and easy to carry around. They offer good value for money if you’re just starting out. However, you won’t be able to change the lens.

You’re stuck with the one that comes with the camera. Perfect if you’re looking for simplicity, but less so if you want to develop your skills.

Bridges

Bridge cameras are a cross between compact and DSLR cameras. They look like a DSLR (which is impressive!), but the lens cannot be changed.

They offer more control than a compact camera, but less flexibility than a DSLR or mirrorless camera.

Mirrorless

That’s where everything changes. Mirrorless cameras are what Canon, Fujifilm and Sony offer. They’re compact and lightweight, but best of all: you can change the lens!

This means your kit can evolve as your photography skills develop. It’s the ideal solution for improving your skills without being held back.

SLR cameras

Once the dominant type, SLR (single-lens) cameras use an internal mirror to reflect the image into the optical viewfinder.

They do the same job as mirrorless cameras, but they are bulkier and heavier. Canon, Fujifilm and Sony also offer SLR cameras, but the global trend is clearly towards mirrorless models.

A piece of advice

If you’re just starting out today, go for an entry-level mirrorless camera. It’s the best investment for learning without getting frustrated, but you can ALREADY take great photos with your mobile phone. Yes, seriously! Modern mobile sensors are incredibly powerful, and composition accounts for 90% of photography.

There’s no excuse not to get started. Start with what you’ve got to hand, and progress at your own pace.
